Organising a community clean-up day

At Earth Wise Skips, we believe that saving the planet starts at a grassroots level – in the community. For years, communities have been banding together to give their local schools, recreation areas and parklands a regular clean-up.

Every year, Clean Up Australia Day brings the country together to combat the pollution that seems to makes its way into our most-loved and used areas.

Unfortunately, COVID restrictions have put a lot of our Sunshine Coast community clean-up day events on hold. But in the new year, we have no doubt they’ll be back again.

And Earth Wise Skips can’t wait to get involved.

If you’re thinking of organising a clean-up day for your community, but you’re not sure where to start, here are some tips for putting a committee together, getting the word out and having a great day in the neighbourhood.

In 2024, we’ll provide more information about how we can help you with your events.

It takes a village to hold a community clean-up day event. So you’ll need to get the right people on board who can inspire the community and get jobs done. Here are some suggestions to help event organisers get started!

Choose a community clean up day coordinator

Every event needs someone to manage the people, schedule and budget. Choose someone who is super-organised and enthusiastic – a natural leader with great attention to detail.

Find people for the event committee

Next you need a committee of people who are as excited about this idea as you are. Choose people who are well-respected in the community so they can inspire others to get involved.

Also find people with different skill sets to take on different responsibilities. Only give people as much responsibility as they’re comfortable with – remember, they’re all volunteers and probably have real jobs and families that need their attention too.

Choose the event date

Check your community calendar to find a date that doesn’t clash with anything else going on. Ideally, hold it at a time of year when the weather should be nice.

Choose which areas to clean up

No-one knows your community like you do, so you’ll know which areas have the worst rubbish problem. Is it the playground at the primary school or community centre? Or down at the local creek?

Choose areas that are important to the local community and really need a clean-up.

Get the word out

Put a committee member in charge of event promotion – ideally someone savvy with social media.

But also encourage everyone to get involved with the promotion, including distributing flyers to local businesses, shopping centres, letterboxes and community events. Everyone in the committee should be talking about this event!

Organise your skip bins

We can help with this part of the event! If you contact us with the date and where you’ll be cleaning up, we can give you a very affordable quote on skip bins for your needs.

We’ll help you decide on the best and safest locations for the bins.

We’ll then bring the bins and take away the rubbish – you can just focus on getting everyone together and having a great day!

Start planning now!
