How green is a green waste skip?

At Earth Wise Skips, we are passionate about providing environmentally conscious waste removal services.

As both a family and a business, we’re very concerned about the amount of waste that ends up in landfill, so we’re conscious about how we dispose of our rubbish.

Customers often ask us what actually happens to the green waste that we remove from properties in our green waste skip bins.

So in this article, we’ll pull back the curtain and show you what happens after garden waste leaves your property.

What is green waste?

The term ‘green waste’ means different things to different people. For the purpose of our waste removal service, a green waste skip bin is only for organic tree and plant waste. Basically any waste that’s biodegradable is considered green waste.

This could include garden waste such as shrubs, branches, palm fronds and leaves, and grass clippings.

A green waste skip bin is ideal for landscapers or home owners who are doing work in the yard or garden. We have a 2 cubic metre bin for smaller home jobs right up to an 8 cubic metre bin for public parks and major landscaping work.

Disposing of green waste properly

Most people don’t realise that green waste can be harmful to the environment because it is the environment! But having piles of garden rubbish lying around for long periods can actually be harmful.

For example, dried grass and branches can be a bushfire hazard in the appropriate conditions. It can also block pipes and drains when it rains or floods, causing flooding in streets and homes.

A pile of green waste is the perfect nest for rats, mice, spiders, snakes and other animals. (And if the turkeys get their claws on it, the pile will soon be spread across your property!)

Burning it isn’t a legal option in most states and it damages the environment as well. Green waste in landfill can rot and release more gases into the atmosphere.

So don’t let your green waste pile up or end up in wheelie bins destined for landfill.

Our environmentally conscious green waste solution

So what is a clean, environmentally friendly way to remove green waste from your property? Even a green wheelie bin only gets emptied once a fortnight and you won’t fit much in that. This is when you can call us to deliver a skip bin to you.

When we return to collect your full green waste bin, we take it to an approved sorting and recycling facility. Here, the waste is broken down into pieces and composted. On the Sunshine Coast, all green waste is turned into mulch.

When you dispose of your green waste this way, every bit of it is composted and recycled. It can be processed and used later as fertiliser, potting mix and mulch.

Keeping your green waste healthy

To make all this possible, we need you to keep your green waste healthy. Keep any waste out of the skip bin that shouldn’t be there, like bricks, soil, tiles, fence palings, rocks, large tree roots and stumps.

And, of course, don’t put any prohibited or dangerous items in the bin, like asbestos, chemicals or food and food packaging.

If you do plan to get rid of other waste like clean soil, or concrete, bricks and masonry, you may need a different skip bin altogether. (Some waste types can be mixed and some can’t.)
